Mustangs Wrestling: First-Year Wrestlers Making Huge Strides

Since starting the season in October, the Lucerne Valley High School wrestling squad, under first-year wrestling Coach Juanmiguel Angeles, has made tremendous strides with the novice wrestlers honing their technique and getting some wins along the way.

“The boys are working on several skills from takedowns to bridging,” said Coach Angeles. “All our wrestlers are first-year but doing well. They have put up good matches against our league opponents and won some matches along the way. They have come a long way from October to now and are still working hard to get better every day.”

The Mustang wrestling team consists of five athletes who are gearing up to wrestle at the League Finals in February.

Anthony Filippi wrestles in the 126-pound category and has a current record of 3-7. He is working on his double leg takedown, according to Coach Angeles. At 132-pounds, Timmy Bruce has a current record of 8-13 and is working on his bridging to escape pins. The team’s 195-pounder Evan Herriman unfortunately broke his hand over Christmas break and is currently sitting out. Eleventh-grader Kevin Angeles is the Mustang’s 220 and has a current record of 13-7 and is working on his throws while younger brother Irvin Angeles (9th grade) is wrestles in the 285-pound class and has a current record of 10-10. He is working on building his base, the coach said.

Coach Angeles graduated from LVHS in 2017. He was a multi-sport athlete who played football, basketball, wrestling, golf, and baseball. “I joined wrestling while I was a junior and took third place at league finals that year and the following year I took first. When he’s not coaching — he’s also part of the LVMHS football coaching crew — he works in construction and is married to 2017 LVHS graduate Annabelle Fox. The couple has a daughter.

“Overall the team has done great them being the first year and hopefully, they will stick with wrestling and be even better next year. I always tell them that wrestling takes time to pick up but if they put the work in they can get better at it.”
