Middle School Programs Night a Success

The recent Lucerne Valley Middle School Programs Night was a success, according to organizer Naomi “Ms O” Oyadomari, the popular teacher who serves as the school’s AVID adviser.

The first-ever event, which was held on the evening of April 18 in the gymnasium, had many Lucerne Valley students (current and future) and family members gather to learn about the school’s programs, most notably AVID. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college.

Current college- and vocational-bound AVID students were on hand to greet guests and talk to them about the program. The middle school AVID program works in concert with the high school AVID program, whose adviser is Mrs. Linda Schlenz. Mrs. Schlenz also was on hand to help out and spread the good news of the AVID program. High school AVID students, who serve as tutors for the middle-schoolers, also were in attendance. The AVID students also explained about students’ binders, which are purchased by the school district to help them stay organized by recording daily assignments.

But attendees learned about so much more about the opportunities at Lucerne Valley Middle School.

Mr. Doug Ferber, the Lucerne Valley Middle High School principal, greeted guests and introduced the educational team that serves the students. Numerous tables filled with a wealth of informational material was located throughout the gym including the annual educational trip to Washington, D.C. Teacher Mrs. Cynthia McDonough introduced the middle school opportunities in sports. She is also a coach for both middle school and high school students. Other programs also participated in the event.

Guests also had a lot of fun at the event photo booth, listening to rockin’ music and received prizes. The popcorn was free and Mrs. Evans provided Rice Crispy treats, which were made by her ROP class.
