Mustang Track Team Competes in Five-Way Meet

The Lucerne Valley Girls and Boys track squad competed in the first Cross Valley League track meet of the season on March 1 at Riverside Preparatory School in Oro Grande. Five teams competed in the first of several league meets over the next few months.

The competing teams were Excelsior Charter School, Silver Valley, Riverside Preparatory, Big Bear High and Lucerne Valley.

The highest-placing Lucerne Valley male athlete was Jose Alba, who took 2nd place in the boys 400-meter run with a time of 56.06 seconds. He also took 7th place in the 200-meter run with a time of 25.08. On the girls side, Rebekah Hart took 9th place in the discus with a throw of 46 feet, 4 inches.

“Our first meet was not great for times but the experience gained was valuable," said Coach Guillermo Betancourt. "The athletes know where they are compared to other athletes of different schools and so can now set goals and plan to achieve them.”

Lucerne Valley Track team is in a rebuilding year, Betancourt said. The team includes returning sophomores Jose Alba, Elijah Lien, and Kevin Alvarez. This season the girls team increased from two to eight athletes, and the boys and girls team combined total 20 athletes.

According to the coach, the athletes need to work on increasing strength and endurance.

"Team work has been great and watching the team support each other has been great," Coach Betancourt said. "Coach Patrick Lord and I want to instill sportsmanship, competition and the love of the sport."

Standouts of the team so far are Jesse Perez, who was voted team captain, Jose Alba in the 400 and Kevin Alvarez in the 1600. With hard word, Jesse Perez has the potential to make it to CIF in the 800 and the 3200, according to the coach.
