Lucerne Valley Hosts, Competes in CVL Cross Country Finals

After taking a break last year due to COVID-19, the Cross Valley League cross country finals were again held, this season with Lucerne Valley Middle High School hosting the event that featured three separate races on Tuesday, November 2nd.

Lucerne Valley Middle School runner Dutch Demke, a 7th grader, initially led the Middle School two-mile race around the track and out to the surrounding desert portion of the race. He found hard and came in 4th place out of 30 runners with a time of 12 minutes 21 seconds to wrap up the season.

In the 3-mile girls varsity race, Lucerne Valley freshman Cheyenne Flowers got a personal best time of 31:40. Senior Blaine-Monet Willoughby was out one of the senior runners recognized at the start of the race but was unable to compete.

It was the final high school cross country race for seniors David Daniels and Robert Cook, who along with other seniors were recognized at the start of their 3-mile race. Dylan Hileman ran personal record time of 24:19 and Sophomore Dylnn Cagle had a time of 22:02.

Max Sannes Runs Away From Field

In the boys race, Big Bear senior Max Sannes ran away from the pack during winning in a time of 15:54 for the three-mile course. Elijah Lovett, a sophomore for the Academy for Academic Excellence, took second place in 16:54 with Big Bear placing their top five runners in the top six places, running away with the team title.
 
Sannes is one of the fastest high school cross country runners in California. He ran a time of 14:24 for the three miles at the Woodbridge Invitational. Sannes placed 9th in a race that saw Newbury Park run the greatest team cross country race in history with four runners breaking 13:50. 
 
Junior Leo Young broke his older brother Nico Young’s course record by one second with a time of 13:38. Close behind Young was fellow 11th-grader Aaron Sahlman with a time of 13:42, Young’s twin brother Lex Young, 13:44, and Sahlman’s older brother Colin Sahlman, a senior heading for Northern Arizona University, with a time of 13:48. Colin Sahlman will join Nico Young who made it to the Olympic Trials 5,000 meter run as an NAU freshman.
 
In Tuesday’s Girls Varsity Race, University Prep-Victorville sophomore Florence Moreno took first with a time of 21:01 closely followed by University Prep freshman Zury Anderson. Cobalt Institute of Math and Science sophomore Mia Villa took 3rd in 21:16, Priscilla Ramirez, a Riverside Preparatory senior, took 4th in 21:28, and Academy for Academic Excellence senior Mikayla Szobonya, took 5th in 22:23. University Prep won the Girls Varsity team competition.
 
In the Boys Middle School two-mile race, Jose Valdez, a Cobalt Institute of Math and Science 8th grader, won the two-mile event in 11:20. Sixth-grader Michael Searcy of Hesperia Christian took 2nd in11:47. Ryelon Brandt, an 8th grader from Cobalt Institute of Math and Science, took 3rd in 12:09.40. Seventh-grader Dutch Demke, of the host team, Lucerne Valley Middle School, took 4th in 12:21, and Rafael Carvallo, a University Prep-Victorville 8th grader, rounded out the top five in 12:30.
 
In a close team competition, Hesperia Christian, with 26 points, eeked out the win over Academy for Academic Excellence, with 29 points.
 
In the Girls Middle School two-mile race, Kendalynn Henderson, a Cobalt Institute of Math and Science 7th grader, won in 14:10. Eighth-grader Brooke Lorz, of Academy for Academic Excellence, came in second place in 14:37. Alexis Esparza, University Prep-Victorville, 7th, was in 3rd place in 14:56, Zia Arielle Amba, Academy for Academic Excellence, an 8th grader, was fourth in 15:06, and Layla Craven, an Academy for Academic Excellence 6th grader, took the fifth spot in 16:42. Riverside Prep won the team race.
