A select group of students and staff were recognized by Mr. Douglas Ferber for outstanding achievement and dedication to their school during the monthly awards at Lucerne Valley Middle High School on January 26.
According to Principal Ferber, the award winners were selected by a loose-knit committee who nominated and discussed deserving individuals. Student award winners were nominated by their teachers.
“We have a lot of people who support you,” Mr. Ferber said to the enthusiastic crowd during the mid-morning assembly in the gym.
The winners for January 2018 are Jesus Arreola (11th grade), Tory Lopez (10th grade), Mr. Kenneth Calder (health class and physical education teacher), Mrs. Monica Tevis (front office staff), Zhing “Neil” Mao (12th grade), Lyric Pearson (7th grade), Max Roman (8th grade) and Toni Moreno (9th grade).
Mr. Ferber commented on each winners’ accomplishments. Regarding Mrs. Tevis the principal said, “Mrs. Tevis does everything we ask of her. She does a great job.” He said Mr. Calder has been a key member of the Lucerne Valley Middle High School staff for many years and well deserving of a pat on the back.
Mr. Ferber also gave a special shout out to Pastor Gary Schlenz for installing a new sound system in the Sgt. Brian L. Walker Memorial Gymnasium. Pastor Schlenz’s wife, Mrs. Linda Schlenz, is a longtime teacher who is heading the high school’s AVID program.
