In recent years, the Lucerne Valley community has showered graduating high school seniors with monetary scholarships to go toward the students’ education. But 2023 will down in history as the year giving turned into a veritable flood of giving with more than $115,000 being donated to a select group of seniors from the Class of 2023.

The LVHS Class of 2023 Senior Awards Night, which also included the announcement of the class’s Top 5 students, was held on May 18, 2023 in the Sgt. Brian Walker Memorial Gymnasium.

Once again, Dave Rib of the Mitsubishi Cement Corporation Educational Foundation came to hand out the largest scholarships. A record $44,000 was given to nine members of the Class of 2023 and several other previous graduates who are receiving ongoing scholarships to further their education. Seniors Ian Collins, Christian Gutierrez, Jose Mendoza, Aiden Morgan, Kailey Quintero, Riley Rodriguez, Harlee Sheehan, Riley Stearns, and Kayla Timmons each received $2,500 scholarships from MCCEF.

Ian Collins took home the most scholarships with 26 given by a cross section of local donors. Six local businesses and organizations gave scholarships of $1,000 or more. Joining MCCEF in the $1,000 or larger category was Lone Wolf Academy, Giles Construction, Hi Grade Materials, LV Lions Club, LV Community. Chuck Bell gave several donations in memory of his late wife Julia Bell, a beloved educator in Lucerne Valley. Sherry Hardin gave donations of $100 each — to 19 seniors.

School and district educators gave scholarship donations, so did local businesses of all types — the local First Foundation Bank, Lone Wolf Colony, local restaurants, construction companies, the LV Youth Program and more. But the bulk were locals — families, individuals and the like — who reached into their pockets and donated their hard-earned money to help a student in their educational pursuits.

The Lone Wolf Colony scholarship recipients are Aiden Morgan ($1,000), Janet Acosta ($500), Savannah Porter ($500), Omar Fausto ($500), Ian Collins ($500), Linda Avelar ($500) and Ian Hess ($500).

The scholarships were presented by First Foundation Bank representatives Brooke Diegmiller and Alicia, and Lucerne Valley teacher Cindy Lazenby along with several district staff members that included LVMHS office manager Andrea Moretz, Principal Nate Lambdin, Principal Jason Story and others. Also handing out awards was a field representative for 34th Assembly District representative Thomas W. Lackey.
