The Lucerne Valley varsity volleyball team will host River Springs Magnolia this Tuesday, October 19 at 6 p.m. for a wildcard game for C.I.F. Division 9. The Lady Mustangs have a record of 4-7 in the Agape League and 4-11 overall.
Coached by Kimberly Morales, Lucerne Valley is led by seniors Elissa Otwell, Lizbeth Avelar, Andrea Garcia, and Paula Woods. Other seniors seeing regular action are Kaitlynn Moore and Cadence Russ. Freshman Zoey Davis, the tallest of the Lady Mustangs, is a powerful force at the net. Junior Kailey Quintero and sophomores Kristy Klaus, Shyann Kerestessy and Itzel Ramirez round out the squad.
Lucerne Valley finished its regular season with an exciting game on Senior Night at home. Seniors Paula Woods and Andrea Garcia had some of their best play of the season as all six seniors from the team playing most the game and hanging tough with Jaguars from University Prep. Each game was exciting as the girls would lose in extras, 20-25, 26-28 and 25-27.
The JV team hosted the Eagles from Excelsior and went all three sets, each one very exciting. But it was the third set that had everyone on the edge of their seat as the game would go back and forth. The Eagles prevailed in the end taking the 3rd set 22-20, but sophomore Kayden Davis and Junior Kimberly Luna had excellent play to help the Lady Mustangs stay in the game.
One of the most exciting games of the week, however, was the Middle School A and B volleyball teams going head to head in the Sgt. Brian L. Walker Memorial Gymnasium. The B, coached by Amanda Nichols and Sarah Courtney, prevailed, but the A squad, which was coached by Stephanie Barden with assistance by Mr. Barkley, played tough to the end.
The Middle School volleyball game was made even more special as all Lucerne Valley Elementary School 6th graders were in attendance to cheer on their classmates who help comprise the Middle School teams.
