Lucerne Valley High School 9th-grader Madeline Kline and 10th-grader Thomas Cota were named Site Winners during the Riverside-Inyo-Mono-San Bernardino (RIMS) AVID Write Off awards ceremony on Wednesday, March 11 at the University of Redlands.
Every year, RIMS AVID students participate in a region-wide timed written essay, according to LMHS AVID site coordinator Naomi Oyadomari. Write Off topics are based on current events, with relevance to students in our region. All articles and materials are given in advance with a suggested outline for teaching to lead up to the student essay.
All students wrote their essay for 45 minutes, using their articles and notes for resource information and quotes. That was their only form of writing for their essay, Ms. O said. Family members, teachers, AVID Coordinators and others were in attendance during Wednesday’s ceremony.
“It’s a wonderful ceremony and a chance for our AVID students to be recognized among hundreds of other AVID students,” Ms. O said previously. “They see just how huge the AVID program is and feel proud that they were recognized among their peers.”
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
